Helen Kennedy has joined the Woodsmith Foundation team as our new Community Builder for Dormanstown.

What is a Community Builder we hear you ask? Helen shares her insight.

What does a Community Builder do?

A Community Builder supports people in their local area to grow their own ideas and try new things that bring people together, improving the community and making it a better place to live.

We connect people and opportunities together, creating networks, encouraging and supporting local people to take action on the things that matter to them whilst creating spaces that allow people to come together, get to know each other, build trust and share skills.

What is your background?

I grew up in Boulby Road in Dormanstown, my Father was a Fitter in the Beam Mill at British Steel and our family were part of the proud community set up specifically for the steel works.

My childhood memories are filled with the Steel Gala and the huge floats, street parties, picnics at Locke Park and dipping in and out of the neighbours houses and playing all day in our huge back gardens.

What excites you about your new role?

I am so passionate about community spirit and what people can achieve together – I’m here to offer advice, support and resources. I look forward to chatting with everyone and hearing about your hopes and dreams for the area I have always loved.
